In a never ending bid to clean this bike up, I was at it again. Scrub, glop, wipe, rinse......<br />Of course the bearing needed to come off, so out came the cutting wheel. Being very careful, so as not to damage anything I cut off the bearing and race. Next, masked off the bits that didn't need to be painted and proceeded to squirt some black.<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhi_G9qoeMwrJwou8gae_VpC77KwAZGY0jTaxNBm-CPjgE8sJXUbQuVtZMaT4S6FtSXhq4xh8oNRfcvSeT0V5XDfafMDknH4AOvpNQNEzsBuR0IHpGlRyLfnyR0hjmNvzeHl6P6UrMi1oI/s1600/DSCF1718.JPG"><img style="float: right; margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhi_G9qoeMwrJwou8gae_VpC77KwAZGY0jTaxNBm-CPjgE8sJXUbQuVtZMaT4S6FtSXhq4xh8oNRfcvSeT0V5XDfafMDknH4AOvpNQNEzsBuR0IHpGlRyLfnyR0hjmNvzeHl6P6UrMi1oI/s320/DSCF1718.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5565457840750072082" border="0" /></a><br />Much cleaner and ready for paint.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6PQVAKfNYs0-6BeXRREGBgUie1xeAdXrHLqoHJpRhTPUrXoNG3r_pB7rnob-ytRLd8KFmJfvH_rS5CuEpzl7rxJyaPHOn_m7L0urhJASgqIA3L0ZxqY3ql3p70jZGBF_k-djuu61eVZo/s1600/DSCF1722.JPG"><img style="float: right; margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6PQVAKfNYs0-6BeXRREGBgUie1xeAdXrHLqoHJpRhTPUrXoNG3r_pB7rnob-ytRLd8KFmJfvH_rS5CuEpzl7rxJyaPHOn_m7L0urhJASgqIA3L0ZxqY3ql3p70jZGBF_k-djuu61eVZo/s320/DSCF1722.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5565457847243823154" border="0" /></a>Blackened. Braking NewsHow time has flown by, nearly four months have past since the last post. As is the case I am far behind on these posting versus actual work that has been done.<br /> If one looks back at posts 14 and 15, wheel work can be observed; this post is a bit of a catch up on those.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjME0M3mTrcbQj28k1nwrcrQH5pj4UfjpZqoTcqQzkcP9tpF3dwGsO-r7GDhKWTVduUVifNZZmEhRdqrzhNFxanVyPc4pv-zxDG414hcmKMdS6QNmcd7UrluC3sNNa1df0E7ngY4hkVSIA/s1600/DSCF1630.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjME0M3mTrcbQj28k1nwrcrQH5pj4UfjpZqoTcqQzkcP9tpF3dwGsO-r7GDhKWTVduUVifNZZmEhRdqrzhNFxanVyPc4pv-zxDG414hcmKMdS6QNmcd7UrluC3sNNa1df0E7ngY4hkVSIA/s320/DSCF1630.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5555978015483686290" border="0" /></a>Look closely at the rotor mounting, the hub and rotor don't match up, not to mention there were two bolts holding the works together. The only saving grace was that there was an absence of a front braking system. No chance to snap of those two bolts under braking and find the inside of the picker bushes. I just get shivers looking at that thing in such a state.<br />As always the rust gremlins have danced upon the disc, and as anyone who has read past posts knows, those gremlins haven't missed much on this project.<br />Turns out that is a rear brake rotor, fitted so beautifully to the front, so as I ripped apart the front wheel that thing had to go. Which meant I need a replacement. I wanted to try the wave style rotor, but didn't want to drop hundreds of dollars on one. I was able to cash in a few of my frequent buyer points and got a good deal on what I was looking for.<br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgse4bdi5T3jR9R5xkT8JpHhqtG5xk178NGvwSTM_g_4j_fE3fAiuTtLSWoB65OZNfAXYSmW6csuVax_woCmT20r_cvLmlxb1eurSSWzU0pI1QDTc7mEBo61XYhJ4d7u2suejhEHHHs8fY/s1600/DSCF1791.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgse4bdi5T3jR9R5xkT8JpHhqtG5xk178NGvwSTM_g_4j_fE3fAiuTtLSWoB65OZNfAXYSmW6csuVax_woCmT20r_cvLmlxb1eurSSWzU0pI1QDTc7mEBo61XYhJ4d7u2suejhEHHHs8fY/s320/DSCF1791.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5555982128408997586" border="0" /></a>The new "Typhoon", just hope it works.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9QTG7uW0fBTbocusxYIVT2A_pkE8zwke9yOk2B42dNkbsSk9CD4u_HTDM4__ayegPM-mMbfNqEoY6pNrxnQuIV9-8PzYe9ym-jjlpleBglf35GcvNCWINFGkShTPES2Vtkp2CQKoGYgs/s1600/DSCF1792.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9QTG7uW0fBTbocusxYIVT2A_pkE8zwke9yOk2B42dNkbsSk9CD4u_HTDM4__ayegPM-mMbfNqEoY6pNrxnQuIV9-8PzYe9ym-jjlpleBglf35GcvNCWINFGkShTPES2Vtkp2CQKoGYgs/s320/DSCF1792.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5555983412258692882" border="0" /></a>Looks like it should fit.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaIcvQeE6cLY6QxZaBan0b4qOgTZN3s2zgNaQOFsMkVSeR64ddJqeRX2XTGkyMpFe7GSJ3h6YGXcJ4VsBY-e65z_QUq6ydqfvzcfD_pA6ocxC8HbdGefqiQMEU0Pjix3kXWA3H2S765yU/s1600/DSCF1793.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaIcvQeE6cLY6QxZaBan0b4qOgTZN3s2zgNaQOFsMkVSeR64ddJqeRX2XTGkyMpFe7GSJ3h6YGXcJ4VsBY-e65z_QUq6ydqfvzcfD_pA6ocxC8HbdGefqiQMEU0Pjix3kXWA3H2S765yU/s320/DSCF1793.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5555983417572093234" border="0" /></a>Put some thread lock on and use my calibrated elbow to torque those suckers in.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieosASVONTAt0CdDxFyL1rIAgPYnohdlZNpfil6USlVp2jh2no-dgfovgSTwjabbsjhnfmMi2bXfrV_Y8kuTk8MkgaBo655FSxMWwOcTrovdOZMad72uG13gJc7p-Ogmunb5L_IJXohoo/s1600/DSCF1794.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieosASVONTAt0CdDxFyL1rIAgPYnohdlZNpfil6USlVp2jh2no-dgfovgSTwjabbsjhnfmMi2bXfrV_Y8kuTk8MkgaBo655FSxMWwOcTrovdOZMad72uG13gJc7p-Ogmunb5L_IJXohoo/s320/DSCF1794.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5555983427895330994" border="0" /></a>Perfect fit, and if you notice I used grade 12.9, a torque guide can be found here <a href="http://www.dansmc.com/torque_chart.htm">http://www.dansmc.com/torque_chart.htm</a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBrTDfoKwbhF-gQFKhJ5jgAYZT4PYfGX6W0iTHsPwehUp6qtTYs4WqPQnbTmOwKTgIKdBRV_CRxr5fb4nDpQ_bYbxVNCRFQU4qYgKsa13JFocWQvXCUEQy0bNP3euGMBHn5pd4JKj1Nng/s1600/DSCF1795.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBrTDfoKwbhF-gQFKhJ5jgAYZT4PYfGX6W0iTHsPwehUp6qtTYs4WqPQnbTmOwKTgIKdBRV_CRxr5fb4nDpQ_bYbxVNCRFQU4qYgKsa13JFocWQvXCUEQy0bNP3euGMBHn5pd4JKj1Nng/s320/DSCF1795.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5555983433390614066" border="0" /></a>So far so good, of course the real test is yet to come.KX Projecthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13932697956971864663noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3723442170923113958.post-25901160591478718972010-09-07T21:19:00.000-07:002010-09-07T22:41:15.094-07:0020. Not shocked, Linked in.After spending the summer buried in three different history texts and writing over one hundred pages reporting on those books I did not feel the drive to write here. But with a few days off I have brought myself back to the keyboard to expose some of the KXProject happenings.<br />Two posts ago I began to tackle the shock and linkage, in this post I wash off all that dirt and rust and begin pulling bits apart.<br />Obviously the first task at hand was to bathe everything, I didn't get to take pictures of the bath scene because everyone was too shy to pose in such a state. After drying out I dove into the dismantle, and each time I do so I am amazed more than the last time as to the total lack of care and maintenance the past owners bestowed upon this bike.<br /><br />The linkage arm:<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj18P2uSXttz9T1IA28w79_r-_1u3DICnuOS1GRFlRIn-tuoXXwyxS-eOTk-6KCz176gY7SVeVamMjD6G4MEy5-n4cfAi9OkXY0fXAWn4JKpSonlqMwgufLNJ4hm0D9Cc5o92qAIL-X8Gw/s1600/DSCF1788+%282%29.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj18P2uSXttz9T1IA28w79_r-_1u3DICnuOS1GRFlRIn-tuoXXwyxS-eOTk-6KCz176gY7SVeVamMjD6G4MEy5-n4cfAi9OkXY0fXAWn4JKpSonlqMwgufLNJ4hm0D9Cc5o92qAIL-X8Gw/s320/DSCF1788+%282%29.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5514397501999500322" border="0" /></a> As is and was the case with all bearings on the KX these were knackered, thus they had to come out and new put back in. I made the rounds of the local shops just to get an idea of what pressing the old ones out would run me. The cheapest I came up with was 25$ per bearing, ppffftt. In this economy, right. How do those guys stay in business?<br />So I created a press for a grand total of $0. A neighbor had some threaded rod, nuts and washers laying around which he kindly donated to the cause. I scrounged around a few local scrap piles and came up with a "receiver" and pulled out my impact sockets to play the part of "presser". I also pulled out the mini torch to add just a hint of heat if needed.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcdHp1FzqV4k4yLKRd15UELOZ6FwXfPTQp1DKNFI_LQuCWAcfn7gFUejv8m8cxjhkObRF8BU0MsytlRzOk-JqY2QgG8rSizSOnlGzylT2GswHdNUYF0r_oULEjRnQh-QXKvki-cbYCd-Y/s1600/DSCF1790+%282%29.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcdHp1FzqV4k4yLKRd15UELOZ6FwXfPTQp1DKNFI_LQuCWAcfn7gFUejv8m8cxjhkObRF8BU0MsytlRzOk-JqY2QgG8rSizSOnlGzylT2GswHdNUYF0r_oULEjRnQh-QXKvki-cbYCd-Y/s320/DSCF1790+%282%29.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5514400508418118178" border="0" /></a> Here is the basic setup: Run a nut up a bit on the left side of the threaded rod, then a 3/4 or so flat washer then a larger fender washer that is a touch larger than the receiver tube, place the receiver onto the rod upto the washers. Place the rod through the bearings to be removed. Next find a corresponding sized socket, just a bit smaller than the bore, but a large enough to positively engage the bearing. Slide that onto the rod on the right side of the arm follow by another set of proper washers and another nut. Snug up this contraption making sure to keep all straight so as not to cause any jamming. Perhaps a little oil and heat, I used both and those suckers slid like butter.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiz93kTj1ABp_15A6CldSYTqbJeUmxrKTNokuPNQawJBZO7XiJjzwHy-y9oYewtphlFyRDjP3mIX5DL7yipB4ZXy_jDk4kVQfVfhUpCysk9QYZA4kBA-lHfvqdRhGFMOU29TW9rowxPJTc/s1600/DSCF1789+%282%29.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; FramedI have been busy with college, I have 13 weeks of classes crammed into 8, phew. But the project continues to move along, slow and steady. I had to hold of this Saturday as I 'had' to attended the AMA National at Washougal. Snapped a few pics, and as it was retro weekend I retroed it up with a film camera, no fancy digital camera, so it's off to the developers tomorrow. They vintage 2 strokes were on hand for a few laps, talk about slow and steady, well slow anyway. I still love the 2 strokes though.<br /><br />As can be guessed by anyone who has "followed" my progress, as slow and sporadic as it has been, would correctly assume that the entire machine has been entirely stripped. So a few photos to prove the point.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTLKd4bRqZzUcn5bs32ZxuZTHSJ1dT4O9mxALYjnyWrEnGiDP-uPCcImD-X5CmoZYvQIWuah-W6v8tpAyKS_ryMmZ2ZXF-eXFacKPUYAxo_hyphenhyphenjwOtcHWUFIrQMkVxz2UsDkhRn2NYeNTQ/s1600/third+grouping+%285%29.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTLKd4bRqZzUcn5bs32ZxuZTHSJ1dT4O9mxALYjnyWrEnGiDP-uPCcImD-X5CmoZYvQIWuah-W6v8tpAyKS_ryMmZ2ZXF-eXFacKPUYAxo_hyphenhyphenjwOtcHWUFIrQMkVxz2UsDkhRn2NYeNTQ/s320/third+grouping+%285%29.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498107288964955026" border="0" /></a>Having fun.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2aOJjABEZ5j6_CzNnfxhip5EXcnL68V4Mo_P745LRZdbIgChPgg-2TejAmVPXB8d3WWia9SsxqgrIEZgqeFnahREyggDolXwPRI1H24Sn_klBWYqd6k6fjSSE8q21Zdfg3t9xatLOado/s1600/third+grouping+%2814%29.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2aOJjABEZ5j6_CzNnfxhip5EXcnL68V4Mo_P745LRZdbIgChPgg-2TejAmVPXB8d3WWia9SsxqgrIEZgqeFnahREyggDolXwPRI1H24Sn_klBWYqd6k6fjSSE8q21Zdfg3t9xatLOado/s320/third+grouping+%2814%29.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498107300406918978" border="0" /></a>Almost bare naked.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTctalYbn-2mE8cXk-Y7AROz00OE4FkimS8a-49m6JZEv8F-N5soOkAS40cGpPjK5bxBQHlMtrt2aaWxqD5pL2gsz6OKIlvzLOBEk2QwGaExIpmLJwvKyDt2P1cIT1GXRfX-dg4_-LxpM/s1600/third+grouping+%2812%29.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTctalYbn-2mE8cXk-Y7AROz00OE4FkimS8a-49m6JZEv8F-N5soOkAS40cGpPjK5bxBQHlMtrt2aaWxqD5pL2gsz6OKIlvzLOBEk2QwGaExIpmLJwvKyDt2P1cIT1GXRfX-dg4_-LxpM/s320/third+grouping+%2812%29.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498107295311531922" border="0" /></a>The rear master cylinder screws were rusted solid, had to drill them out. ShockedAs mentioned in the last post work has not ceased, it did slow down, and I find myself quite a bit behind in updates versus work that has actually been done.<br /><br />I should have been shocked, but I wasn't. The state in which I found the shock, linkage and swing arm was appalling. When I pulled the pivot bolt rust and a few needle bearings fell to the floor. <br /><br />One side benefit from working on such equipment is that your hands do not become oil and grease soaked. A quick and simple rinse with hot water and soap cleans the hands right up, no need for brushes and repeated scrubbing. One disadvantage is trying to remove all the frozen bearing parts and related bits. A few grunts and some grumbling later the swing arm was off.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifB9oysYeI0udoV0XSEhUQo5YXHMj585fn5wohxYs6cLeshKYFgn2OwSZ-KxKKiPN-xtl0tit7lzxhNhVe5-EBYFjuAnArqHZK1_JDWwAxgaYKrW8XOsJqHTAnf2LQ3hAnpw1kdiqK1cA/s1600/third+grouping+%2817%29.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifB9oysYeI0udoV0XSEhUQo5YXHMj585fn5wohxYs6cLeshKYFgn2OwSZ-KxKKiPN-xtl0tit7lzxhNhVe5-EBYFjuAnArqHZK1_JDWwAxgaYKrW8XOsJqHTAnf2LQ3hAnpw1kdiqK1cA/s320/third+grouping+%2817%29.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485098861988956274" border="0" /></a>Off.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9DBz0JZ4-iJGuV4sV8440Ba0tm2MxTJy6-HFoldVKvRPwyEmYyypXevMa-s_AAmo4FRda7rN6wMQPz50CZyZKJqdWjtC2TUx0erVH61-HNe5NF3oEPk7NLes99g5QqCHiWCwJ4rLPa2g/s1600/DSCF1722.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9DBz0JZ4-iJGuV4sV8440Ba0tm2MxTJy6-HFoldVKvRPwyEmYyypXevMa-s_AAmo4FRda7rN6wMQPz50CZyZKJqdWjtC2TUx0erVH61-HNe5NF3oEPk7NLes99g5QqCHiWCwJ4rLPa2g/s320/DSCF1722.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485088955202410226" border="0" /></a>See what I mean, rust.<br />This is just the way it came out of the bike.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />One thing that astonishes me is the lack of lube where it is needed, and the overuse where it is not. Take the following for example, sure some did make it to the bearings, a paste thickened with sand. But why an all encompassing mass is needed around the stem bolt is beyond me.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3QdLBM8k3ip65Vv_cZIMmUtIj8n4o4e_e5h173OPayxrx2nWXYS1PLt_xEK5izvH4AGhUUcEjLWUVkeCPpGhw1R9bYtgOrlxs3t7nYlkEiewpDSgczgx20NgxgqrUf4iBT0D3EpexdeM/s1600/2-08-10+001.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3QdLBM8k3ip65Vv_cZIMmUtIj8n4o4e_e5h173OPayxrx2nWXYS1PLt_xEK5izvH4AGhUUcEjLWUVkeCPpGhw1R9bYtgOrlxs3t7nYlkEiewpDSgczgx20NgxgqrUf4iBT0D3EpexdeM/s320/2-08-10+001.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485092378653875778" border="0" /></a>This was fun to clean.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />The same story holds true for the swing arm, I was unable to find any lube internally, it seems lubrication was for the external bits only.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-o0RUjdnjUK-lsLgTLcfhUKqq2_pinXhtNIJ44XW77UlOIJ4G76pzafURUXf-UyzR6RxDc8c5kV_PAIoyFyjXMoOGPMxiXnEAg-hdgPD5G9JQR-ChcDGrXCv2i9hbS4L2si10khrCUd0/s1600/2-08-10+016.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-o0RUjdnjUK-lsLgTLcfhUKqq2_pinXhtNIJ44XW77UlOIJ4G76pzafURUXf-UyzR6RxDc8c5kV_PAIoyFyjXMoOGPMxiXnEAg-hdgPD5G9JQR-ChcDGrXCv2i9hbS4L2si10khrCUd0/s320/2-08-10+016.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485094470342036642" border="0" /></a> DIRT bike.--------><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKroN06BLkoFHBZiEQ5BgOHePGz5qWyKf2tkmF4gKZ-C0bgEavAZXUYd8t90ZHwCr5m3sZKm-eb8MuLxAL2chQP1omlaULKUKiYVG2fkmkuTASZy_13lM-Pdx_ggAI7mc_OO-Jc2UYQ8A/s1600/2-08-10+018.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKroN06BLkoFHBZiEQ5BgOHePGz5qWyKf2tkmF4gKZ-C0bgEavAZXUYd8t90ZHwCr5m3sZKm-eb8MuLxAL2chQP1omlaULKUKiYVG2fkmkuTASZy_13lM-Pdx_ggAI7mc_OO-Jc2UYQ8A/s320/2-08-10+018.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485094478877602386" border="0" /></a>My hands looked like prunes after all the cleaning.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKXnbR_qbo45U-_1BjsOBaxcwTkLhp7O7kxz7wHVU-OVS-dVrcxTkhKUfjJW1E3JkgOASsCYaH4aVJiQa0A2x8rXZAZOmrPT9IzJ46DHWTVhmzF3mKFB85cudzEOXvI4de4PHlEYaJ0GA/s1600/DSCF1713.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKXnbR_qbo45U-_1BjsOBaxcwTkLhp7O7kxz7wHVU-OVS-dVrcxTkhKUfjJW1E3JkgOASsCYaH4aVJiQa0A2x8rXZAZOmrPT9IzJ46DHWTVhmzF3mKFB85cudzEOXvI4de4PHlEYaJ0GA/s320/DSCF1713.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485094491032797122" border="0" /></a>Just think of all the new bearings I will have when finished.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2Ksf5FOc_0X3Dk2IJCfUgnFbjQrpPHjIYklyED3r_OUKyv_O7NJvpt4S2k_EeMtvpADy8kq7NaDATMFUJ3fY6bBcX-uEGqGq1xq46llp2h226XqUxiq3ET7CjGvPiJ-rpTSG5UnLHPAc/s1600/DSCF1715.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2Ksf5FOc_0X3Dk2IJCfUgnFbjQrpPHjIYklyED3r_OUKyv_O7NJvpt4S2k_EeMtvpADy8kq7NaDATMFUJ3fY6bBcX-uEGqGq1xq46llp2h226XqUxiq3ET7CjGvPiJ-rpTSG5UnLHPAc/s320/DSCF1715.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485094506383156994" border="0" /></a>I do this for fun, and it is.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />I may have spoke too soon earlier, my hands got plenty dirty fiddlin' with this stuff. Were was I? How's the Project?Well, well, well.....it has been so long since I have written any tidbits of info in the bloggisphere. I must provide an update and say thanks as some donations have rolled in. Let's get to it.<br /><br />I want to keep this blog about the bike, not about my personal life, all I will go into here is that I am working on an Associates degree. Funny how the posts ceased at about the same time I entered the program. That is not to say I also ceased working on the KXProject, the pace did slow to a crawl, yet some things did get done. Sandblasting took place, dirty hands, and an accursed set of swing arm bearings had to be dealt with. Cleaning, priming and painting of a few items took place as well. All of these edge of your seat stories will be posted here in short order. I do NOT get the summer off, but I do have fewer hours of classes, so hoping to ramp up the project proportionately.<br /><br />I was also reintroduced to my long lost love. Wow, is she hot, even after all those long years apart, ten years since our last meeting. I even got dressed up for the occasion, and I must say I felt a bit awkward the first 30 minutes or so, stumbling and fumbling so as not to look the fool. After an hour or so though, I was wearing a huge dumb grin across my face, remembering how beautiful it all used to be, and was sure to be again. <br /><br />After that first weekend together again, in April, we met two more times, but alas, I think we will be apart for a few months, at least until autumn at the earliest. Oh, well, a few months is not to long after nothing for a decade. I just wanna say "thanks for showing up again". Snowboarding, I'm back. Just don't break any of my bones.<br /><br />Yes, snowboarding and the siren song of the mountains have pulled me back into their clutches, but I think I can put up with that.<br /><br />That is plenty of information about non KX stuff, you don't need any more.<br /><br />Onto donations, I have been finding out that the little button in the upper right hand side corner works. I must say thank you for the donations, and yes a little goes a long way on this project. Thanks again.<br /><br />I will start to post project reports again, so after a bit of a hiatus, I'm back.KX Projecthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13932697956971864663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3723442170923113958.post-54688475440753882002010-03-28T18:57:00.000-07:002010-03-28T20:51:41.087-07:0016. What's goin' on?Many things goin' on, and have found that time slips by so quickly. Haven't updated the KX project since March 8th, but that does not mean no work has taken place. Actually, quite a few things have gotten done while catching up on the SX series over the weekends.<br /><br />For example, one of the local shops held a sorta' tent sale, I was instructed to be there early as a line begins to form at around 8 am. I showed up and found myself fifth in line, waited for an hour to pass and the doors to open, when they did the masses poured in. I will be honest, prices where low, if you wanted selected youth or outdated clothing, energy drink emblazoned paraphernalia, or cheap Chinese riding gear. Ah, what a huge disappointment, not one single hard part to be found, no wait, I did find Renthal unbreakable levers for $30. I made a dash to the vendor.<br /><br />"Show me the Renthals please."<br /><br />"We don't carry Renthal, but we do have these, they are the pioneer of the unbreakable lever."<br /><br />"These" turned out to be something that looked like they came off of my dad's 1967 Triumph, aside from the fact that they had some strange geared, levered knuckle joint so as to be unbreakable. Over this u-joint was a strip of dry rotted old inner tube. No self respecting rider would mount this crap to his bike.<br /><br />"Isn't that false advertising, saying Renthal levers and you don't have them?"<br /><br />"No, it is the only banner I have, and I do sell levers for $30. You want one or what?"<br /><br />"No thanks."<br /><br />The whole "sale" was really a joke I think, much like the dealers themselves. Walking into a dealership these days is like walking into an 'Old Navy' or 'Gap' for "bikers". An avalanche of clothing spills out as one enters these new cycle emporiums, all walks of the bike world are not immune. Fifteen years ago when I worked at a dealer we had hard parts galore, ones you could touch and fondle before buying. I walked into that same dealer not long ago and couldn't find part one while shoveling H-D vests and pants out of the way. Same goes for the sport bike crowd and the MX as well. I want to see parts, and things I can bolt on that will make my ride lighter, faster, and more aesthetically pleasing, "Rockhard" and "Mobster" energy drink underwear ain't cuttin' it for me.<br /><br />So, when another dealer was to hold a similar sale I growned and prepared for another dismal showing. But, to my surprise and joy, 85 percent of the sale was hard parts, and lots of um. The prices where excellent too.<br /><br />The KX project has a number of items on the "replace" list, and I hoped to tick a few off. I spied boxes of green plastics, but what were the chances of finding 1989 KX plastics, 100 percent none I found out. I was prepared for this though, and after digging into a number of crates full of body work I came out with something I needed. A 2001 KX 125 Polisport front fender, and yes it works. A little further prospecting and up came some Maier fork/brake gaurds, these being from a '89 KDX 250, yes they do match up perfectly to my 125er.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_lsuyJdmP1tGp8h4htQEUEzmk-zxas9-QRahd1H0xps66CIN8FtktSlf6_Kv6nslcYZqYElBIK_dtCIpsEaRmxye_bDZ_94lrArV3KO8VleWa6ehKJ5KM1UEyXE867gd5AMuk0D2iajQ/s1600/1-31-10+008.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; TrueWell, what can I say. Three times I have set out to update this post, but lacked focus.<br /><br />Letting the bearings chill in the freezer I readied the tools I would need to drive them home. A deadblow hammer, a socket that matches the outside race of the bearing and snapring pliers.<br /><br />Cooling shrinks things, which is good, so my bearings had shrunk. I could not discern by how much with my naked eye, but I placed the first onto/into the hub and rapped it home via the socket making sure to seat it all the way home. A flip of the wheel, and not forgetting to drop in the inner spacer, I drove tight the second bearing, then a pinch of the snapring into its groove and the hub was nearly complete. I squeezed in the seals and slid the axle into place. Done.<br /><br />After cleaning, polishing, painting and lacing up the front wheel it was time to true it. Let me preface this story with two points: 1. It is terribly difficult to true a wheel, false. Many of the new breed of rider has been mislead by money grubbing dealers, and shops, into believing wheels are some sort of item that the cosmic bodies must be in alignment to service. Not true; I only wish that these kids would take some time to actually work on their bikes, to understand how and why the work the way they do. So many of the younger riders I come in contact with answer the question of "how did you fix that?" with "I dunno, the guy at the shop said he did sumthin' with it, and now it works". And at $80 an hour, ouch.<br /><br />I have come across a few who do work on their machines and it seems to me they get more out of the riding, the lifestyle of motorcycling. I know I do. For all you who wonder, and read the forum postings telling you not to build and true wheels, just try it, it can be done. If you need any help, many people are out there ready and willing, myself included.<br /><br />Point number 2. I forgot what it was after preaching so vehemently.<br /><br />As of right now I do not have a large shop, or even a small shop in which to work, each time I tinker on the KX I must unpack all my tools and equipment along with any of the parts I will be working on that day. Sooo, I don't have a truing stand set up, but forks or a swingarm will do just as good, as this is the front wheel, the forks would do the trick. A word to the wise, make sure all is secure and tight, that goes for forks, axle, pointers or gauges, you do not want any movement or shifting.<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFucFhAfX5IVURJZ7RS7Y4x-_gyC9b7sWDb-j_3-OWfehLQM9miQ6gvg-6OX2feJ6-0YktTf8PvYvCMyoKRw7vDziaxFkrcPZaqfqa0cQKgRESOSpV_rKGxfJnI7Sjx5JgFZDeUM9vLrA/s1600-h/2-20-10+%282%29.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFucFhAfX5IVURJZ7RS7Y4x-_gyC9b7sWDb-j_3-OWfehLQM9miQ6gvg-6OX2feJ6-0YktTf8PvYvCMyoKRw7vDziaxFkrcPZaqfqa0cQKgRESOSpV_rKGxfJnI7Sjx5JgFZDeUM9vLrA/s320/2-20-10+%282%29.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5446441662740492642" border="0" /></a> I placed the fork legs into the triple clamps and laid them across an old shop chair, tying all together and making double sure that no movement would be possible. I used a pick secured to the fork leg as a read out gauge, (in the photo I used a rubber band to hold the pick, which I forgot to snap as work commenced, zip ties and tape were used during actual work.)<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMkgHYfw3XB_mW1ZofdtSlFci3nV25Z4wS_gtrKWnps4HrwklcCC8KprqC6YMUXcJD3GmtCJ0NPzS1DG5cqGkSe6prLFYy-Hl4_7GVqPrNjySeI6dw0gWyXje2tPtJnB1AS6vtb0fyNdI/s1600-h/2-20-10+%283%29.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMkgHYfw3XB_mW1ZofdtSlFci3nV25Z4wS_gtrKWnps4HrwklcCC8KprqC6YMUXcJD3GmtCJ0NPzS1DG5cqGkSe6prLFYy-Hl4_7GVqPrNjySeI6dw0gWyXje2tPtJnB1AS6vtb0fyNdI/s320/2-20-10+%283%29.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5446441669267846402" border="0" /></a><br />The rim needs to be the same distance from the pick all way round. How do you achieve this? By tightening or loosening spokes, for example, if the rim is 1/8th of an inch AWAY from the pointer, the rim needs to be pulled "in". To pull this low spot in, start in the center, and work out, of the low area by tightening the near side spokes. If tightening the near side a half turn, loosen the far side spokes a half turn. <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOQwLO_Udg1c6wPhghB57Q_cTF1XOg_dGzWXl_1yU-2cBxQcW-LqxpzwSTPUa6sm0rwwX65_QFv8jc2zkhXmxW4F9G6Zkv6V4tO2InJ4M0EJ3GO7ViGGHVJPqBg5AFCG2OTz27m-pm9D4/s1600-h/2-20-10+%286%29.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOQwLO_Udg1c6wPhghB57Q_cTF1XOg_dGzWXl_1yU-2cBxQcW-LqxpzwSTPUa6sm0rwwX65_QFv8jc2zkhXmxW4F9G6Zkv6V4tO2InJ4M0EJ3GO7ViGGHVJPqBg5AFCG2OTz27m-pm9D4/s320/2-20-10+%286%29.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5446441671625126562" border="0" /></a><br /><br />To remedy a high spot loosen the near side spokes and tighten the far side spokes, work slowly, using 1/4 turns and be patient. Something that helps with spoke adjusting is to make sure when building the wheel to use a lube on the spoke threads and nipple seats. This will prevent hours of cursing in the future when it comes time to service the wheel, which you will need to do. The wheel must also be round, not an egg shape, so make sure of this with another gauge. Though, as with most older bikes, the spokes have been neglected, dirty and rusted tight. The tire was also contaminated with the hideous dry rot disease.<br /><br />Out came the tire irons, and in a matter of minutes I had that dry tire heaved into the "get rid of" pile, along with the tube. The rim tape was given a wash and is in condition to be reused, although the same cannot be said of the rim lock which split in two when I went to do a proper inspection, so new tube, and rim lock are needed. I did get three brand new tires thrown in when I purchased this project, a sand, a soft and an intermediate, at least I will only need to procure a rear tire.<br /><br />To loosen the tight spokes a squirt of Blaster oil did the trick, and after pulling all thirty six, I decided they needed a bath and shine as I would be reusing them.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvxJU9DJ4uvbsIC1AkuUFcBo6d-q66c8Sa2KJl5xoZPF4cD_VNlIUKIDiqE2CmsaEB06DHmtLPtthji6xIWHaMXIFUbmnjzv0V_PKimMTzSi5i4x8Pv4gVBicQgp1wxc_a97r8BpjCS1s/s1600-h/1-31-10+021.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvxJU9DJ4uvbsIC1AkuUFcBo6d-q66c8Sa2KJl5xoZPF4cD_VNlIUKIDiqE2CmsaEB06DHmtLPtthji6xIWHaMXIFUbmnjzv0V_PKimMTzSi5i4x8Pv4gVBicQgp1wxc_a97r8BpjCS1s/s320/1-31-10+021.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5442072792199295186" border="0" /></a>A dollar spent for some "CLR" was well worth it, all the nuts, bolts and spokes take a bath in this stuff to rid the rust.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjND_36nYN9aQE4_AVXJ_E-F1Q9DMMrYJFA4tgZC-15Hvj6tc4qceImOEzz30aREBQeHkTR-dlKfz0DZj2HeChVmD5d2cqDI4okyfTRQvgEZ8djI06T93Hzyp9ShxsFFx5b1aaOXzmHd0g/s1600-h/1-31-10+024.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjND_36nYN9aQE4_AVXJ_E-F1Q9DMMrYJFA4tgZC-15Hvj6tc4qceImOEzz30aREBQeHkTR-dlKfz0DZj2HeChVmD5d2cqDI4okyfTRQvgEZ8djI06T93Hzyp9ShxsFFx5b1aaOXzmHd0g/s320/1-31-10+024.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5442074527981071874" border="0" /></a>This is not going to be fun, thirty six dirty spokes.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiB_tEG7pFslulfWFI-R1OXsaDsiQL5TTaZdSwQFJMywV66ZK_mVHLJPVUQGritU2u6Ciocn3Oq7JNNWkaC1Mr5u4_5eZY5Sh6EkmDkTnqdp_s_nd4c6SK7z3dEJGh91d_vOAYZQYNAHqU/s1600-h/1-31-10+019.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiB_tEG7pFslulfWFI-R1OXsaDsiQL5TTaZdSwQFJMywV66ZK_mVHLJPVUQGritU2u6Ciocn3Oq7JNNWkaC1Mr5u4_5eZY5Sh6EkmDkTnqdp_s_nd4c6SK7z3dEJGh91d_vOAYZQYNAHqU/s320/1-31-10+019.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5442074586165121298" border="0" /></a>Everybody in the pool. Well, 36 spokes times once with a wire brush, once with steel wool and once with polish, 36x3=108. And, each "once" was not one time, but a series of repeated, rapid, rubbing motions, thus a few blisters and some arm fatigue.<br /><br />Next on the to do list was the hub, after carefully prying off the dust seals, which are in great shape, I pulled the inner snap ring and set out to remove the bearings. For this I used one of my old maple drumsticks that had been converted into a sort of punch or drift, one time use only. Inserted into the hub, I reached for a deadblow hammer and drove out the first side, flipped the hub over and wrapped out the second. Like I said, this wheel was in okay shape, and the bearings came out with no problem. As with any bearing one removes a new must take its place, and with a couple of hours research I found two for $5.25 with free shipping, you know what the dealer gets for those. A lot more.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCQHnbkWrb407uE8MjqyAyFWfT2JoxUfs0iORS9-e_6Y-qTWjLVdGZEQmAHbRtcLniedFVfFTFqgTFht5ZB7jVMdfuGdr-1tRBehAz5Tl3Su2TdKS0qE8nIxL-NAvmmIHZD-X3e-rnplU/s1600-h/1-31-10+038.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCQHnbkWrb407uE8MjqyAyFWfT2JoxUfs0iORS9-e_6Y-qTWjLVdGZEQmAHbRtcLniedFVfFTFqgTFht5ZB7jVMdfuGdr-1tRBehAz5Tl3Su2TdKS0qE8nIxL-NAvmmIHZD-X3e-rnplU/s320/1-31-10+038.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5442081937052033682" border="0" /></a>All the bits, minus the bearings.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdm8cgcgv8QGIfEh9yliIPorBSNOuJJconvdNFqpJTXQuLtLRciZGB2jaAfNCK0vCJqDEYF5hr8LxkxybfmTOzgUoUw4_vm51UZh2bxoqkn22pEJd31pMgjOdw4mcD0bU-2WJGjcosMB4/s1600-h/1-31-10+035.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdm8cgcgv8QGIfEh9yliIPorBSNOuJJconvdNFqpJTXQuLtLRciZGB2jaAfNCK0vCJqDEYF5hr8LxkxybfmTOzgUoUw4_vm51UZh2bxoqkn22pEJd31pMgjOdw4mcD0bU-2WJGjcosMB4/s320/1-31-10+035.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5442081944910787154" border="0" /></a>Time to get cleaned up.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiW0WdszU13nRlA7T-bdymKEoEsfpnaE9y3wnr15GkCjfQLKLLYeOu_-nzQvrBV7tIvOi6c6_6EZSZlQOs7Kwa55-r3qP-3Q02GiQXQXa1z7hZMokvuBwg6gIZ1C-oGOWoi5Mbyn8kC6s/s1600-h/1-31-10+037.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiW0WdszU13nRlA7T-bdymKEoEsfpnaE9y3wnr15GkCjfQLKLLYeOu_-nzQvrBV7tIvOi6c6_6EZSZlQOs7Kwa55-r3qP-3Q02GiQXQXa1z7hZMokvuBwg6gIZ1C-oGOWoi5Mbyn8kC6s/s320/1-31-10+037.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5442081958580794098" border="0" /></a>You again.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjA6-Jtt7JR7ytePEh05tRGQd4zWagZ0reQp60hewA5bnwpHQFEHtvZg9z61u-FXRMUPUV3tbz_wrtFqtOlFwmVGlksk4c5XGc_61JvtDJCaCFMKDQMUWQEV8Q-2p03O_FwnQWLVH-eG64/s1600-h/1-31-10+040.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjA6-Jtt7JR7ytePEh05tRGQd4zWagZ0reQp60hewA5bnwpHQFEHtvZg9z61u-FXRMUPUV3tbz_wrtFqtOlFwmVGlksk4c5XGc_61JvtDJCaCFMKDQMUWQEV8Q-2p03O_FwnQWLVH-eG64/s320/1-31-10+040.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5442083936062977202" border="0" /></a>I like photos, so I am including many of them, enjoy. Unfortunately, I failed to record the 'before' photos that I really wanted. A bit to excited to get started tearing and stapling.<br /><br />After spending a great deal of time in finding a seat cover for an '89 KX 125, I came to the conclusion that paying over fifty bucks for a piece of vinyl is ludicrous. I said to myself "Self, you can go and buy some vinyl, and make your own seat cover." And that is just what I did.<br /><br />If you take some time and go back over the pre- tear down photos a few rips and tears can be seen on the seat. One nice open wound on the top rear and a slice along the lower right side. Tears and slices aside, the old cover was just that, old. Faded by the sun, seams letting go, and a dated color scheme all meant it had to go.<br /><br />A pair of needle nose pliers made short work of yanking out the old rusty staples, once they where removed the cover basically fell off with a few foam crumbs. All in all the foam was in descent shape, no need to replace as of yet. At some point in time one of the rear seat mounts had been broken, I removed both of them and am now fabing up new ones out of some aluminum flat stock. After dismantling the seat it went to the tub for a quick soap and rinse, taking care not to dampen the foam. The foam may have looked to be in good shape, but I didn't want to risk dissolving it at the first sign of moisture.<br /><br />As I let the cleaned seat dry I googled up some fabric dealers in the area, I was lead to a shop in east Portland where I was able to pick up three yards of black gripper vinyl for $7.00. How elated I was, I eyeballed the three yards, at least fours seat covers were possible, perhaps more. I rolled up my find and headed home. But, before reaching home I stopped off at a few of the local cycle shops and was pleased to find the same material on some of the bikes out on the showroom floors. Fifty dollars for one or seven bucks for four, no question as to which way to go here.<br /><br />Rain was pouring down the next day, so working outside on the seat was out, into the kitchen I moved. Seat, scissors, staple gun and ammo, vinyl, all was on hand. I began by slicing out a generous swatch of fabric a few inches larger than the seat, the seat is not flat, so I allowed for the bit of rise at the front of the seat. I started tacking in the center of the right side, then pulled the material tight across the seat and tacked the left center. I worked out from the centers, pulling and tacking, tacking and pulling; my fingers started to feel the burn after reaching the slight upturn at the front of the seat. I felt like one of those rock climbers who ascend cliffs with just a few chalky fingertips, because of the upturn the material needed to be stretched even tighter so as not to bubble up.<br /><br />Finishing the stretching of the canvas, I stepped back to admire my handy work. "Looks like factory to me."<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhht3hJHAAM6X5EFK1v4Jb5uk_d75Xn2k7rCtu52Te-NtabMLTklX667_MRzyOyNufLGU3MN5S8fPm4c7uqhzDImCqYTmmZRVYO-tp3PxZB0fpWQNoiged1PwjT6Y0UZ8ZF2YZ4sYd848E/s1600-h/seat+%282%29.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhht3hJHAAM6X5EFK1v4Jb5uk_d75Xn2k7rCtu52Te-NtabMLTklX667_MRzyOyNufLGU3MN5S8fPm4c7uqhzDImCqYTmmZRVYO-tp3PxZB0fpWQNoiged1PwjT6Y0UZ8ZF2YZ4sYd848E/s320/seat+%282%29.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5438365850881930802" border="0" /></a>That's a lot of staples.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNWr6r5jWpUy7Rj2hhRj8JryVp0X6cRkcT8HVEcTCZeIghHBMUxgRU6BTuWXjYl6Pmdfbm5-KgkKUGN5t0FsJoUGAVXYd8b-4YTHpVcOPOppywXcYBUgqu_PDZiPFHXHF4zDbQg7ctiuI/s1600-h/seat.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNWr6r5jWpUy7Rj2hhRj8JryVp0X6cRkcT8HVEcTCZeIghHBMUxgRU6BTuWXjYl6Pmdfbm5-KgkKUGN5t0FsJoUGAVXYd8b-4YTHpVcOPOppywXcYBUgqu_PDZiPFHXHF4zDbQg7ctiuI/s320/seat.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5438365871136449650" border="0" /></a>Don't forget to trim off the excess material.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYCOWNjD2v4za_DqwwyvutHKFaJHt_l1jsf0tkgwxVtTmqYkxeP8Orqa4kzI2osicDYOlGbat3ogyrDRLIxFSVm2ohxxezPONWg9QZNQqmkw4z24VeSaqbgW39y_66-6mMgzMxBUnWsno/s1600-h/seat+%281%29.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYCOWNjD2v4za_DqwwyvutHKFaJHt_l1jsf0tkgwxVtTmqYkxeP8Orqa4kzI2osicDYOlGbat3ogyrDRLIxFSVm2ohxxezPONWg9QZNQqmkw4z24VeSaqbgW39y_66-6mMgzMxBUnWsno/s320/seat+%281%29.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5438365847486307474" border="0" /></a>That's one nice lookin' back side.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzQSc1A7UKwJCRTh1s9NfGOOzTZYPJZwLWF9uPXF-0G4dqZET0EnlGku0VY5ECDLFOOblIhafmqMluujW6_xs14QjvHsdb_yE_eWq_DN_5H9ytKRLwdV3gOCNWm_sSr_XVAEStRAtfkr4/s1600-h/seat+%284%29.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzQSc1A7UKwJCRTh1s9NfGOOzTZYPJZwLWF9uPXF-0G4dqZET0EnlGku0VY5ECDLFOOblIhafmqMluujW6_xs14QjvHsdb_yE_eWq_DN_5H9ytKRLwdV3gOCNWm_sSr_XVAEStRAtfkr4/s320/seat+%284%29.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5438380336566644082" border="0" /></a>Must be a young seat, no wrinkles.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqXZ70ljM13OZlDGBAqMAvEUfPh1iezWS_9zEhB4FZCdnC2JwgLQNJts6Ej7AlTmjPGpEqaPO7h6vsmvyZ5oe9grcs-FU0i5imKsqAKYHuBt0LF6KLLgGDQLsT_sbbshrvES9yR6sijb8/s1600-h/seat+%283%29.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqXZ70ljM13OZlDGBAqMAvEUfPh1iezWS_9zEhB4FZCdnC2JwgLQNJts6Ej7AlTmjPGpEqaPO7h6vsmvyZ5oe9grcs-FU0i5imKsqAKYHuBt0LF6KLLgGDQLsT_sbbshrvES9yR6sijb8/s320/seat+%283%29.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5438365863694060610" border="0" /></a>I also built the stand under the seat.KX Projecthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13932697956971864663noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3723442170923113958.post-69157216259457660982010-02-05T22:22:00.000-08:002010-02-07T00:10:32.845-08:0012. A few years back PJ1 quit making it, why? Surfing over to Color Rite I did a spit take when seeing the 30 some bucks for a spray bomb of just the paint, they do recommend the clear coat also. I didn't stick around to check out the price tag on the top coat; I will bargain the price lower for a car, but not on a can of green paint.<br /><br />A few weeks back while at Skunks Auto Parts looking for the Duplicolor handlebar paint I noticed their engine paint in a similar shade to KX green. I filed this tidbit of info into the brain box. A Home Despot was not far away, so a quick run into the paint section for a hand full of green paint chip samples was in order. Back at home I sifted through the chips matching them up to the frame, not the faded sun bleached portion, but a nice hidden section so that I could get as true a reading as possible. After finding the right match, it was back to Skunks.<br /><br />Now the difficult bit, someone had sprayed a bit of the Duplicolor Grabber Green on a nearby shelf, so out with the chip for a match up. It was close, not 100%, but 98%. The $7.00 price tag was a bit steep for the budget build, so more hunting was necessary. Quite fortunately there are five auto parts stores within one block of each other and a quick rounder of them found the Grabber Green at Hapa's for $5.25.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdmQFb321a5zubqPm7s8MuRUtOE_TPrBwXYPlEWWSHbQwnfGwSojoac3CeDFvvxjCsaDzY1MfY3NlWzfqV5StEbCQBBlNqVTGh1N44f7K0t2pAV2Yzg-3w6q5N-yNioHmIheVBnRVLTeg/s1600-h/DSCF1660.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdmQFb321a5zubqPm7s8MuRUtOE_TPrBwXYPlEWWSHbQwnfGwSojoac3CeDFvvxjCsaDzY1MfY3NlWzfqV5StEbCQBBlNqVTGh1N44f7K0t2pAV2Yzg-3w6q5N-yNioHmIheVBnRVLTeg/s320/DSCF1660.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5435014777534148034" border="0" /></a>As can be seen from the first two photos of the sub frame there is a bit of oil and dirt, and even a touch of black paint overspray. So, as with all parts before and every part from hereafter a good scrubbing was needed. A closer look will also find a slight bend to the upper left stay (far lower left in the photo). A steel block and a four pound dead blow hammer made short work of straightening that problem.<br /><br />After a couple of knocks with the hammer it was time to strip the old paint off and prep for the new green. From here on out, most, if not all painted parts on the bike will get a clean, strip, and paint. A number of other items will also receive paint as well, such as triple clamps, hubs, wheels, and any other bits I think can be tastefully incorporated into the finished project.<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtNUw4C1k90raMemtipldm9btfuTKU1EcamuHzIL99bMN8NwPoAhOjYXDQwvnUSPf0Bmp8Gh_-1bUxVA8nh7oR2ZAflGeSwNrLfq4vgDGie-gDOINBxw9Y9D89hRXFXKhLzy1LFU8F5zU/s1600-h/1-31-10+006.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtNUw4C1k90raMemtipldm9btfuTKU1EcamuHzIL99bMN8NwPoAhOjYXDQwvnUSPf0Bmp8Gh_-1bUxVA8nh7oR2ZAflGeSwNrLfq4vgDGie-gDOINBxw9Y9D89hRXFXKhLzy1LFU8F5zU/s320/1-31-10+006.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5435395450139457458" border="0" /></a>Out to the patio I headed with the palm sander, nylon bristle brush, and a clean straight sub frame. Some forty or fifty minutes of sanding and brushing gave way to a bare aluminum frame, which I then hit with dewaxer degreaser. While I let the frame dry I needed to prep my spay area, which I did by backing the car out of the carport. Digging up two lengths of bailing wire I had the frame suspended and ready to prime.<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgf63QOuGh4TVU-6yEmndh3kqfbmL7QF0nqrLCto4h8KSt7Ura2o9Ds5assAMpG8WNKJNQAnqD3p4S2hX9P3kwnt5GjLmewqs8hgUWn8PsO14PL9hPiEp-cmnrgjksGcKsPhqFD3lKCso8/s1600-h/1-31-10+007.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgf63QOuGh4TVU-6yEmndh3kqfbmL7QF0nqrLCto4h8KSt7Ura2o9Ds5assAMpG8WNKJNQAnqD3p4S2hX9P3kwnt5GjLmewqs8hgUWn8PsO14PL9hPiEp-cmnrgjksGcKsPhqFD3lKCso8/s320/1-31-10+007.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5435395458007876418" border="0" /></a>Ready for the first squirt of primer.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_eF6Ey86EV0Of0yUxSXgMK3uudu_qnZFgsF8RYwN8bl_fewBHK3tQiZRPlXbtQdobaMAIMT6hlGcQJQxNasjwyk87rWp2WlRaeh4e3E5-8zj10UamHBMhZOtU7h_JmzC5CKcmSIcQhtI/s1600-h/1-31-10+015.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_eF6Ey86EV0Of0yUxSXgMK3uudu_qnZFgsF8RYwN8bl_fewBHK3tQiZRPlXbtQdobaMAIMT6hlGcQJQxNasjwyk87rWp2WlRaeh4e3E5-8zj10UamHBMhZOtU7h_JmzC5CKcmSIcQhtI/s320/1-31-10+015.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5435399338254335730" border="0" /></a>Hung and ready to go. Some tear down photosI am not going to go in to great detail on the tear down, but I will please the masses with photos of the process. Some of these will also be a glimpse into the general state in which I took ownership of the "KXproject".<br /><br />A few people have seen these pics and grumbled in disgust, exclaiming how horrible the condition, yet, I thought it was in quite good shape. I guess I thought this way since most bikes I buy are already apart, or nearly, with assorted parts in boxes or missing. My very first bike had an unknown malady when my uncle passed it on to me twenty and some odd years ago. Before I could even think of riding, this engine gremlin needed to be dealt with. In the long run this was a good thing as it forced me to become knowledgeable in the workings of the internal combustion engine and all other motorcycle systems.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibAvZu1SaGkUOmOHEqgMVGwCESbOsAaxFBKxaKw1cYY0EFozAXzxpF3KNy7bDiAC_rOu5C_8tXotYablQ-MJfIEJlzA7l1NO9VvwGvcmXbCO7wDoDbVFqa_-z8scvDXw9_JfrvSAt5_vo/s1600-h/first+bike.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 230px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibAvZu1SaGkUOmOHEqgMVGwCESbOsAaxFBKxaKw1cYY0EFozAXzxpF3KNy7bDiAC_rOu5C_8tXotYablQ-MJfIEJlzA7l1NO9VvwGvcmXbCO7wDoDbVFqa_-z8scvDXw9_JfrvSAt5_vo/s320/first+bike.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5432810647981736466" border="0" /></a><br />This was my very first bike. All shined up and no place to go.It has been awhile since writing, mostly this stems from a lack of inspiration. Oh, I have been working on the bike, cleaning and refurbishing. I have plenty of time to work on the KX as I have now joined the ranks of the unemployed. But, as is the case, more time=less money, that is why I clean and refurbish. All those spicy goodies I was lusting after a month ago must now wait indefinitely for a new home at KXProject.<br /><br />One of my latest clean ups, the front axle. It too, had the same disease as the rest of the 125, rust and 20 year old greasy oiled dirt lube. Obviously this is not an aesthetic I want to incorporate into the finished bike.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaEJUY2ZtAgST-HYSjh1SgUbCwT8l7BiOmy3ngHtste9zPZiFqauCsJTNpBkmnLTsNeIEjtq80_4ckaVa8BuURYrlfAsYPaqLT3VcWvAH0kfUUBXSip7clbBWnW1vfkJtdQmr7GUhnwNY/s1600-h/Front+axle+12-28-09+%285%29.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaEJUY2ZtAgST-HYSjh1SgUbCwT8l7BiOmy3ngHtste9zPZiFqauCsJTNpBkmnLTsNeIEjtq80_4ckaVa8BuURYrlfAsYPaqLT3VcWvAH0kfUUBXSip7clbBWnW1vfkJtdQmr7GUhnwNY/s320/Front+axle+12-28-09+%285%29.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430935730524508306" border="0" /></a><br />Scrub brush, check, paper towels, check, LA's Awesome one buck super cleaner, check, bathroom sink, check, drill with nylon rotary brush, check. Time to get dirty.<br /><br />First, I ran a bit of hot water over the grimy axle, then a liberal spray of the LA cleaner. The directions state to let the cleaner soak for two minutes before scrubbing , so for those two minutes I just sat there and watched the process. I must say nothing happened, at least to the naked eye. Out came the scrub brush and I began to lather up. Drippy, dirty, black oil grease slopped all over the bathroom sink and vanity, good thing it is a dark brown counter top. A few minutes with the brush, a rinse and dry, viola, clean.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMPHn0tzXf3q9l0enEG_dQ-KT_BLVHzxse6_zGNX34dC8wPprRHWpHJuSBs5l_55kqc054W4a5vkMIW5gBHAoaMemddTVdZ752utbzrlq9v7fAJU8EUaah4dhuUuy7ERmn3HlWfUnPedg/s1600-h/Front+axle+12-28-09+%286%29.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMPHn0tzXf3q9l0enEG_dQ-KT_BLVHzxse6_zGNX34dC8wPprRHWpHJuSBs5l_55kqc054W4a5vkMIW5gBHAoaMemddTVdZ752utbzrlq9v7fAJU8EUaah4dhuUuy7ERmn3HlWfUnPedg/s320/Front+axle+12-28-09+%286%29.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430956535747128066" border="0" /></a><br />Some may settle for clean, not I. Clean is good, shiny is better. I wheeled my shop/office chair into the bathroom, plugged in the nylon brush tipped drill and set about descaling. How quickly the beauty from underneath surfaced. The hideous tarnish gave way to a wonderful brushed look. Reaching this stage the little kid in me comes out, when these pieces start to take shape and I can see the future project coming together. This is when I dash out of the bathroom or spare bedroom to dry fit the parts to the bike, wheel, handle bar, etc. and envision that first "bbraapp" off into the woods.<br /><br />Another great idea popped into my head, Mothers metal polish on the plastic 'outta bring out a nice sheen. Sure enough, a few rubs of paste and like new plastic emerged, well except for a few deep scratches.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxRsz3MIr49Qha746dhdg-XxaZU1oaT2IK5Sgw3i804fYoxMVJm4CpTDeEUCdxyYihpJBHOSNhPfpZlG9hOurSPPN770Fl83nE1LbI5f9jqzYBdqdX0Pnj8LG36ra72dRS23WWr4YGldQ/s1600-h/Front+axle+12-28-09+%2810%29.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxRsz3MIr49Qha746dhdg-XxaZU1oaT2IK5Sgw3i804fYoxMVJm4CpTDeEUCdxyYihpJBHOSNhPfpZlG9hOurSPPN770Fl83nE1LbI5f9jqzYBdqdX0Pnj8LG36ra72dRS23WWr4YGldQ/s320/Front+axle+12-28-09+%2810%29.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430962455595630226" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwgam-cGqj9IGuQUKiHteF_CfDE_3mVjta9sXrTA74TY-r_dSiah9yZlAY3NCRJJrFnMZMR6Bobg0swHaXPmLjXW8ub5XLuj3MQybGkXQueQouVOLFmHUwMsNmnaSpBzyx3jtjaikCrcg/s1600-h/Front+axle+12-28-09+%283%29.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwgam-cGqj9IGuQUKiHteF_CfDE_3mVjta9sXrTA74TY-r_dSiah9yZlAY3NCRJJrFnMZMR6Bobg0swHaXPmLjXW8ub5XLuj3MQybGkXQueQouVOLFmHUwMsNmnaSpBzyx3jtjaikCrcg/s320/Front+axle+12-28-09+%283%29.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430962462199584850" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRr5oOm8YAP_PLXg1o2lZZiPTIVul1mQbui2-bdP_IAi7TKmx2KsRTbWg5L9zveLrBuV5dehdwOy7KqeI5AqE4CQ-IyuHhn3_PkaZWhTH2s4JmovMM239X891adORn0dnhC0dSWpkwWEA/s1600-h/Front+axle+12-28-09+%287%29.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRr5oOm8YAP_PLXg1o2lZZiPTIVul1mQbui2-bdP_IAi7TKmx2KsRTbWg5L9zveLrBuV5dehdwOy7KqeI5AqE4CQ-IyuHhn3_PkaZWhTH2s4JmovMM239X891adORn0dnhC0dSWpkwWEA/s320/Front+axle+12-28-09+%287%29.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430962448532187586" border="0" /></a><br />After thirty minutes, or so, from start to finish I have a nearly new looking axle. You should see the setup I get to work with, an over sized shoe box and a length of old coax cable dangling from a support beam in my carport. At least I do not have to paint between the raindrops that fall here during a Northwest winter.<br /><br />I ran the coax through the bars, and tied them off to the beam. Next, I began to shake a rattle can vigorously for two minutes before laying down the recommended coats of Duplicolor adhesion promoter. The bars turned out a dull, frosty "color" after applications, and it must be noted that I did not have to rough up my nice shiny bars before applying the primer. In fact it states it can be applied over "shiny metal", and since I am going for a somewhat anodized look, I hoped the mirrored aluminum underneath would come through.<br /><br />Letting the primer dry gave me time to tackle a few other tasks on the bike, specifically the bar clamps, which I will expound upon at a later date.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzVUInU131J-8tXJ2f_zQKbISVWFI1vZpWhlGkOmQNmw-sB6UpVr6TKGYk2fulew-cXLAwMAKVaxBEZZ4cotbiyFkWmzdOdfdidGK4BxTJ_PN8IY_On-uRgn2BjJvuXpEBK_xRlz5o_rA/s1600-h/bars+014.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzVUInU131J-8tXJ2f_zQKbISVWFI1vZpWhlGkOmQNmw-sB6UpVr6TKGYk2fulew-cXLAwMAKVaxBEZZ4cotbiyFkWmzdOdfdidGK4BxTJ_PN8IY_On-uRgn2BjJvuXpEBK_xRlz5o_rA/s200/bars+014.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5426094956905316226" border="0" /></a><br />Now that the primer had cured I could get out the Smoke top coat. Again, I found myself imitating the paint shaker at Home Despot, and after two minutes of spastic gyrations in the parking area paint was ready to be sprayed. No rain was falling on the day paint was being applied, but a bit of a breeze was blowing, so needless to say I was dashing to and fro trying to prevent stray leaves, bugs and dust from ruining my professional paint job. As soon as the last bit of pigment hit the bars I hurriedly untied the coax and dashed the bars indoors to dry, I wasn't looking for any bug track graphics on these. <br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZE-SM8QMuljousr_SG0GjkfhUvhY1ASdc5RYiC3S-M9XagUIVUesjRKPQN6QjQ5HRz_1oVp6Ek-yZ785-ejDFw-DXMiVINE47irFJJhT38trECJpGvZF5aV_L5nHQZfDwuJaRKGLWSm0/s1600-h/bars+015.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZE-SM8QMuljousr_SG0GjkfhUvhY1ASdc5RYiC3S-M9XagUIVUesjRKPQN6QjQ5HRz_1oVp6Ek-yZ785-ejDFw-DXMiVINE47irFJJhT38trECJpGvZF5aV_L5nHQZfDwuJaRKGLWSm0/s200/bars+015.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5426094955118281106" border="0" /></a><br />I hovered over the drying bars, examining them from all angles, protecting them like a naked newborn in a snowstorm. While the paint was wet the aluminum looked a bit dark and dull, a bit disappointing. Crap, gonna have to strip these again. The color began to deepen and really started to improve as it dried. More piles- less bikeThe piles are growing and the bike is shrinking. I think that anyone who is here knows how to take a bike apart, but putting it back together, right, and with no extra bits is what I really want to focus on. So, with that in mind I will not expend an abnormal amount of energy, time or space on the tear down. However, as it is applicable, I will delve into the dismantle and deconstruction, and certainly a few photos are in order.<br /><br />Let's just say I dug in, and in two afternoons the <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">KX</span> was bagged and boxed.<br /><br /> <br /><br /> Still looks like a <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">KX</span> (sorta').<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQkVHzREPYQ-Iu-Fk1KwuylQkiy9SzvOZfj4oxqnGgsVzWEqhRkGBwbvu5DDdb0K1uRW6u49v91JehJEyamx8eiuzoSwPn0r5IuZayBrx6zfMsAT1gLXAaJQniprceSKjaul6kwVkn0PU/s1600-h/11_01_09+%289%29edit.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQkVHzREPYQ-Iu-Fk1KwuylQkiy9SzvOZfj4oxqnGgsVzWEqhRkGBwbvu5DDdb0K1uRW6u49v91JehJEyamx8eiuzoSwPn0r5IuZayBrx6zfMsAT1gLXAaJQniprceSKjaul6kwVkn0PU/s200/11_01_09+%289%29edit.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5425693257223032658" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoQ9VfhZP4R7o4cjH2tvwDmHa06zZVTwHAY8wEMvy5IQFZneXpEknElUmjhYkKhsPrSyhAKpUIZQ2lRAZ94qTT8yj_2jz5kHTyXEuhntNo3EpOZXGGm8JvsSCajjoRa-mXsvJuuAxxIrY/s1600-h/11_01_09+%284%29.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoQ9VfhZP4R7o4cjH2tvwDmHa06zZVTwHAY8wEMvy5IQFZneXpEknElUmjhYkKhsPrSyhAKpUIZQ2lRAZ94qTT8yj_2jz5kHTyXEuhntNo3EpOZXGGm8JvsSCajjoRa-mXsvJuuAxxIrY/s200/11_01_09+%284%29.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5425347319949680850" border="0" /></a><br /> More Rust, I've a good collection <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">growin</span>'.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijBVcgMME66MjzbhCn1VJu7iw-OY70J4plJq7Uy3MhTXKxRoRzumoHBPWDpZ_H_fimtrCie_TpNm0d2oEdfqR3PS6WfontyKpOzpT7whypfBoid9jxCqw82Gb2Px3t5GcwRDDM0R0whIE/s1600-h/11_01_09+%285%29.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijBVcgMME66MjzbhCn1VJu7iw-OY70J4plJq7Uy3MhTXKxRoRzumoHBPWDpZ_H_fimtrCie_TpNm0d2oEdfqR3PS6WfontyKpOzpT7whypfBoid9jxCqw82Gb2Px3t5GcwRDDM0R0whIE/s200/11_01_09+%285%29.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5425347333184139442" border="0" /></a><br /> Tails gone.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0zimD6i2zwhbn1AaN1244QWWiUsR5W_9tp0UZ2kNuKkh9y6BgxeZJaAmk7Z1T7jccicuCWb5lv1BK7m16rrnx6S_bK5q6CmbvuNMRvPFieanKdV45oq9lujZJ6ScrsLL-mYmNzXQfAQM/s1600-h/third+grouping+%2810%29.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0zimD6i2zwhbn1AaN1244QWWiUsR5W_9tp0UZ2kNuKkh9y6BgxeZJaAmk7Z1T7jccicuCWb5lv1BK7m16rrnx6S_bK5q6CmbvuNMRvPFieanKdV45oq9lujZJ6ScrsLL-mYmNzXQfAQM/s200/third+grouping+%2810%29.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5425347338247685218" border="0" /></a><br /> I do not have a garage, nor shed or shop.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDnGXaCix-aWSLH4XnlL94aUDtmf5trwin_8tAHcPprC3vOjBQnifacHNB8g3UX8bYXQI69BaS0Pxwipj_CKOX0la27kRzii-Um5DbBVYoyIrKcr_ydlsrOM5ArEOSGeWyzZVjxXbrBu4/s1600-h/third+grouping+%2816%29.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDnGXaCix-aWSLH4XnlL94aUDtmf5trwin_8tAHcPprC3vOjBQnifacHNB8g3UX8bYXQI69BaS0Pxwipj_CKOX0la27kRzii-Um5DbBVYoyIrKcr_ydlsrOM5ArEOSGeWyzZVjxXbrBu4/s200/third+grouping+%2816%29.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5425347339189021970" border="0" /></a><br /> Only carport and a tiny patio.KX Projecthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13932697956971864663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3723442170923113958.post-66584581064489562382010-01-10T10:31:00.000-08:002010-01-10T21:40:18.013-08:007. Dirty Breather HoleSometimes I have trouble breathing, while cutting the grass, my nose will get stopped up. Perhaps I will come down with a virus, the common cold, and my breathing passages like to cease working in their proper manner. In fact, I doubt anyone can say they haven't experienced problems, at one time or another, with good, clean air flow.<br /><br />Well, what to do? Clean that sucker out, get a Kleenex, blow and dig. Maybe some spray flowed up the beak, an inhaler, something to get the air flowing free. Needless to say, I believe, most people want a clean and clear breather. I know I cannot function properly without an unobstructed airway.<br /><br />Hmm, seems not Everyone holds to this thought though. All I can say is, if my nose looked like the following photos I would probably be dead.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYNO1wiQzsyijHyL0aMDakE0SSpVcMvEq0rb7u9q7HgOLV97x6imHpCNz5v6rVRtIDCnfL0bwaWwJDRJdalU41hvUdM0A8nUYLEsvAJ1u4hsle1t7BZdiEGU_zaCbjEP3AZdmRHyx7PCA/s1600-h/01-03-10+009.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYNO1wiQzsyijHyL0aMDakE0SSpVcMvEq0rb7u9q7HgOLV97x6imHpCNz5v6rVRtIDCnfL0bwaWwJDRJdalU41hvUdM0A8nUYLEsvAJ1u4hsle1t7BZdiEGU_zaCbjEP3AZdmRHyx7PCA/s200/01-03-10+009.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5425185420053283746" border="0" /></a> Better get out a big hanky.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYWfvYoSmeg2arnZU5JksBggTpw7espvZ8smszHfRkxm6tbxEZg2WbsgA5OqOwtnlgKY9e_-9bLEIX3z9dpDcelpAvuxPRfBHEW2tedKlWlId_Ge73pxyQXjypv5-UBWAjf_umwqMXjDY/s1600-h/01-03-10+010.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYWfvYoSmeg2arnZU5JksBggTpw7espvZ8smszHfRkxm6tbxEZg2WbsgA5OqOwtnlgKY9e_-9bLEIX3z9dpDcelpAvuxPRfBHEW2tedKlWlId_Ge73pxyQXjypv5-UBWAjf_umwqMXjDY/s200/01-03-10+010.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5425186443950967458" border="0" /></a> Try breathing through this.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKkT_fzj7ROTbhx1U_kMqWEA0X03UZrvryTkc-m7Rtumrf-f2APaGVLGLoEWQvQzrOkN5pCmtJAIttn3noa25ACp0Ab5JZIW1EmFF3z-9-Ws8waJPW6djQtf-0fM3ARo4u7IBtB5yVwf8/s1600-h/01-03-10+012.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKkT_fzj7ROTbhx1U_kMqWEA0X03UZrvryTkc-m7Rtumrf-f2APaGVLGLoEWQvQzrOkN5pCmtJAIttn3noa25ACp0Ab5JZIW1EmFF3z-9-Ws8waJPW6djQtf-0fM3ARo4u7IBtB5yVwf8/s200/01-03-10+012.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5425185434507696818" border="0" /></a> Look closely, guess where else I found dirt and sand.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJUONXoXao_oA4ILNs9BzCu8T29-Ocn1asIA5YL-MNdxEZr2U-yLiUewQXdPNfigA56XnokgU7t5W1FxM3fm1qR7OHAlSHkhUo6CddXSROgGtyIAXabuJfG3JBha0FnML6qM2W-_-Pm9c/s1600-h/01-03-10+011.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJUONXoXao_oA4ILNs9BzCu8T29-Ocn1asIA5YL-MNdxEZr2U-yLiUewQXdPNfigA56XnokgU7t5W1FxM3fm1qR7OHAlSHkhUo6CddXSROgGtyIAXabuJfG3JBha0FnML6qM2W-_-Pm9c/s200/01-03-10+011.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5425185423554703810" border="0" /></a> At least I won't have an "I'm bored" excuse for some time.<br /><br />Dirty and uncared for. No lever, master cylinder, or line. Ah, seems the absent parts pile begins its growing processes.<br /><br />So, the bars made it into the refurbish pile along with the clutch perch, and bar clamps. The replace pile consists of kill switch, clutch lever, bar pad, grips, cables and assorted hardware.<br /><br />The last post found me rounding up the necessary items to commence work on bringing the bars back to life. Now once all items were in hand I could begin. Powering up the hand sander I gave the bars a thorough once over to remove the layers of dirt and paint. Grabbing some 220 grit I hand sanded the roughed up bars down a bit to get rid of the harsh sanding marks left by the palm sander. Next came the steel wool and then a final once over with the metal polish. Oh no, seems the bars looked almost to good polished to throw any paint onto them. Of course, I already had the paint, and if it turned out bad I could always polish them a second time.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEXRWZbfk_HB7ml-a56v45-daKRPIDZkXnNOinwFTWseLGoe-Za_ZBTZWgs95jcDnQ6x4sl815VpIDAXe_nv8kd9cHWzTeSEtTP9LF55bl1TkCcLZKOVqFR7yT3f83gvjtVFAt8zGvHGc/s1600-h/old+parts+%287%29.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEXRWZbfk_HB7ml-a56v45-daKRPIDZkXnNOinwFTWseLGoe-Za_ZBTZWgs95jcDnQ6x4sl815VpIDAXe_nv8kd9cHWzTeSEtTP9LF55bl1TkCcLZKOVqFR7yT3f83gvjtVFAt8zGvHGc/s200/old+parts+%287%29.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5422008455138901250" border="0" /></a>This is were it starts, the old and dirty.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYF2vQlBEaFEU4ngCsSija6SKnKvZF_n1NKQ_2Pu9Ii_fg-_mwk9-oZK1P9DvkVggerqC3BzPRd5WayPm6JAtnSbp5FZIk1SiJhG3SvCBHcCNrNrh_uA65Yi_9mvzVmLcvQYoONynEUHE/s1600-h/old+parts+%289%29.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYF2vQlBEaFEU4ngCsSija6SKnKvZF_n1NKQ_2Pu9Ii_fg-_mwk9-oZK1P9DvkVggerqC3BzPRd5WayPm6JAtnSbp5FZIk1SiJhG3SvCBHcCNrNrh_uA65Yi_9mvzVmLcvQYoONynEUHE/s200/old+parts+%289%29.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5422008462791458642" border="0" /></a>After a once over with the power sander. No matter how long I examined the bike, and no matter from what angle, I came to the conclusion that getting dirty, to dismantle, was the best way to get a grasp of what I was in for.<br /><br />No matter how small any project starts, it always grows exponentially. This project seems to be no different. As parts went from a complete bike to an empty basket a strange thing happened. When said part was bolted to the complete lot it seemed fine, maybe a bit dirty, but okay. By the time it sat in my hand being turned over and over, it needed to be replaced, or at least refurbished. So different piles formed, replace pile, refurbish pile, the pile of absent parts that needed to be purchased, so on and so forth.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh67JjBFlvEzJRmTcw9A67y9WLrR102KMdcLXov4vTn7VGs6hGIExQ7M6pLecdqz1zghdZAV7_2onc_213T2uy1HCzmqqARi2jQcpUGJtHP0DK-QlYB8B1UmoecikYOHstHJSvyaQiWuzU/s1600-h/old+parts+%285%29.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh67JjBFlvEzJRmTcw9A67y9WLrR102KMdcLXov4vTn7VGs6hGIExQ7M6pLecdqz1zghdZAV7_2onc_213T2uy1HCzmqqARi2jQcpUGJtHP0DK-QlYB8B1UmoecikYOHstHJSvyaQiWuzU/s320/old+parts+%285%29.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420144449828218882" border="0" /></a>The first off were the bars, they turned out to be Renthal, hard to believe under all of the blue, and purple. Basically all the controls were worse for wear, cables and wires shot, grips in trash can, kill switch dead, throttle rough, front brake gone, clutch useless.<br /><br />I knew I could refurbish the bars, so off to the shops for sandpaper, shop rags, wire brushes and wheels, rubbing compound, primer and paint. This project is going to be done on the cheap, I could probably challenge anyone to produce as solid and beautiful final product as this on a slimmer budget than I. But, I digress; so off to Helmart for the rags and rubbing compound, Made in China Freight tools for brushes and wheels, Dollar Bush for sandpaper, and Shkunks Auto for the paint.<br /><br />After doing a bit of research I settled on giving the aluminum bars a sort of anodized look, but with paint. I must say I was a bit skeptical of this stuff, but I went for it, picking up Dupli-Colors METALCAST in smoke color. This was to give a bit of a titanium look, and as I am going for a green and black motif, the smoke seemed like the right color. A rattle can of paint and primer in hand it was time to return to the work shop. Just wait til you see that place.<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_SzE5bGWXPslcllYCuamA9KlNlVhfWMOIMo8ug72q9zIQjuTjq3fwCfhdIwWjNvDSMGEtrHpN5EQeZxdsKS8qgrXxlodKP0mtVgRC6n2J6nlwnr0qL88aIF7ZL9PyHVmg7SIjoOBU5CE/s1600-h/318-MC206.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 69px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_SzE5bGWXPslcllYCuamA9KlNlVhfWMOIMo8ug72q9zIQjuTjq3fwCfhdIwWjNvDSMGEtrHpN5EQeZxdsKS8qgrXxlodKP0mtVgRC6n2J6nlwnr0qL88aIF7ZL9PyHVmg7SIjoOBU5CE/s200/318-MC206.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5420153692899462802" border="0" /></a>KX Projecthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13932697956971864663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3723442170923113958.post-63997796123120748952009-12-13T21:22:00.000-08:002009-12-20T17:15:48.488-08:004. Apparently, the two wheel bearings were not doing their job, at least not very well.<br /><br />When I went to look at the cycle for the first time I asked the young lads about this situation. "We fixed the busted wheel bearings, and then after a little while the rear wheel started to feel funny, and the chain kept poppin' off." "At the shop they said nothin's broke, but that we forgot to put in the third bearing." I think they meant wheel spacers, because there seem to be none found. "We don't have the money to fix it, so we're sellin' it." I checked it over, they had done a number on the rear hub, but it was not ruined beyond repair, or replacement. Of course, not only did the bearings need to be replaced, but also the sprocket and chain as well.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwdgZb8x_Im7e_zznjEFOuVzRRaH1FbkF4BOUIre1FAbcbn8X9RdyKfeXjmVckPXrzuUMLkf_TsT_pU_m3EmafDbIceUApJO8tPdoQJw71B4IPoHDC4mlvdhnUs0NaePr8_I4InH3C3iA/s1600-h/third+grouping+%2819%29.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 274px; height: 206px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwdgZb8x_Im7e_zznjEFOuVzRRaH1FbkF4BOUIre1FAbcbn8X9RdyKfeXjmVckPXrzuUMLkf_TsT_pU_m3EmafDbIceUApJO8tPdoQJw71B4IPoHDC4mlvdhnUs0NaePr8_I4InH3C3iA/s320/third+grouping+%2819%29.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5414964693202966802" border="0" /></a>Just look at those wonderful straight teeth, and the mounting bolts, things of beauty. "The chain kept poppin' off." I wondered how it could have stayed on at all, especially since they lubed it with a thick, gloppy coat of rust. Now, if the rear sprocket is in such a state as this the front can't be much better. It isn't.<br /><br />Perhaps I am being a little harsh in stating that the chain was lubed with rust, upon closer examination, it can clearly be seen that, indeed, oil was used. Not just any oil, either, but used engine leakings mixed with a hearty dose of sand. Super lube, to be sure.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrjShjf71_oXk6bWXnRVIa3JrHZ-qNKSKAnc2DJ0sRzRFeZoccolSIdpe_wogrvpKUHRpXRGv1CrM8erGUskfYsEtG2PX28z6pvq48JF-gO2jD9R-xyVbS4CGL3dRwrz5jqAfr94LGI28/s1600-h/DSCF1628.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrjShjf71_oXk6bWXnRVIa3JrHZ-qNKSKAnc2DJ0sRzRFeZoccolSIdpe_wogrvpKUHRpXRGv1CrM8erGUskfYsEtG2PX28z6pvq48JF-gO2jD9R-xyVbS4CGL3dRwrz5jqAfr94LGI28/s320/DSCF1628.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5414968543215647570" border="0" /></a>This coating not only would protect the chain, but also the entire undercarriage, engine and carb. I could see giving this thing a bath was going to be fun. Here would be the perfect opportunity to dirty up my new scrub brushes, making sure that whatever they came in contact with, from here on out, would be streaked and smeared with the tarry goo. I had a few tricks up my sleeve though for taking care of that grime.<br /><br />Super lube, rust, missing bearings, they all added up to a saggy, limp, or not so limp chain, depending on where you tried to flex it. With all that free play just imagine what happened to the sliders and blocks; gone. My replacement parts list was growing at an alarming rate.<br /><br />If this was the drive side, what did the brake side look like?KX Projecthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13932697956971864663noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3723442170923113958.post-25825561267128177032009-12-11T14:18:00.000-08:002009-12-20T17:15:25.297-08:003. After spending the summer baking my head at the local road race track I noticed an infield <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">MX</span> track, <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">hmmm</span>, what's this I wondered. I took a walk to examine the dusty track more closely, a sign greeted me with the words : Thursday night motocross. Then a list of dates, which I hastily seared into my brain.<br /><br />A week later I worked through lunch so I could finish work an hour early, and make it to the track by six. Ah, to taste the dust, breath race gas fumes, and hear the ring, ding, ding for the first time in twenty some years.<br /><br />Yes, the past twenty years were spent with my buttocks firmly planted atop a road bike. Sometimes on a "cruiser", which is my trusty, rusty rat bike, a Virago 920 circa 1981 that I had to create from boxes of assorted parts. The Virago and I have made many a trip, in many a season around the old haunts of Michigan and Wisconsin.<br /><br />My butt doesn't really sit atop my other road bike, it is more my crotch. A <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">Gixxer</span> 1100, nearly 25,000 miles around the <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">midwest</span> over a period of 4 years. Trips to AMA road races at <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">Elkhart</span> Lake and <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">Brainerd</span>, camping trips in Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin. Wasps down my leathers working there magic over and over again.<br /><br />These bikes have made the long trip from Wisconsin to Oregon, new roads to discover, little unknown towns to <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6">dawdle</span> in. Only time will tell whats out there.<br /><br />I gave up on my woods bike, an XL 250, my <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7">enduro</span> dreams, and lust for <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_8">motocrossers</span> after moving to Wisconsin twenty years ago. Wisconsin is an Indian word meaning: no place to ride off road without asking 60 people for permission and then trying to avoid the obnoxious throttle only has full open speed freaks. The trails are deadly, I went once, about 500 yards and was nearly run over by something I still could not, to this day, identify.<br /><br />The Virago, my <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_9">gixxer</span>, they have been life savers, quite a strange thing to say about motorcycles, but to me no statement could hold more truth.<br /><br />Time to get back on track. What, no ring, ding, ding....? Four strokes? I thought those were for old guys who liked to ride slowly over wet logs, and putt through swampy mud puddles. Yet, here they are burping over table tops and taking apart berms. Well, they did the trick anyway, I have never looked back since, the dirt bug bit again, and it bit hard. Now all I needed was a bike.<br /><br />The ad above says it all.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /></span>KX Projecthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13932697956971864663noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3723442170923113958.post-41711553656530767112009-12-01T20:49:00.000-08:002009-12-20T17:14:05.379-08:001. A False Beginning<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6GCoZk89ZJog9fc3-cnciBGah741Jh6qznYnP-nO3B9b66jKjY34uMqIGZhgpHpVXIjMnVHIeunFjLwUsxwbdmTARcLSSZnCeLOyVu3AohAGNQTwbutHp6onGhL9c-nl5wR6qtv9fRvE/s1600-h/DSCF1613.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6GCoZk89ZJog9fc3-cnciBGah741Jh6qznYnP-nO3B9b66jKjY34uMqIGZhgpHpVXIjMnVHIeunFjLwUsxwbdmTARcLSSZnCeLOyVu3AohAGNQTwbutHp6onGhL9c-nl5wR6qtv9fRvE/s320/DSCF1613.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5410497075955809682" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-family:georgia;"> This is the beginning, of what, we shall see. Will it end up another pile of parts, nuts and bolts rolling around in the bottom of a plastic storage box?<br /> After waiting 20 plus years for my "new" dirt bike I was finally able to lay my hands upon one. It is quite certainly not the most beautiful, or the biggest, 125cc's to be specific. It is not the newest, in fact the last time I rode a dirt bike, this one was rolling off the assembly line in Japan.<br /> So why a 1989 KX 125? The answers are quite simple, no deep inner allegiance to the brand, I've had Hondas, Yamahas, Suzukis. No KX lust from my teenage years of Motocross infatuation. The simple answer is...The Right Price and it runs, yes, it runs.<br /> I must admit it is a bit rough, but I see a beauty hidden underneath the hideous spray bombed plastic, the years of neglect and hard rides, the forgotten bearings.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /></span>KX Projecthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13932697956971864663noreply@blogger.com0
